The Youth Soccer National League tournament is the national qualification for the top teams in the U.S.A. Teams compete a seven-game season series, facing each other in division one of the U.S.A. The top teams qualify for the semis, where the teams play against the same opponent from each division once. The tournament was first held in 1996, with the tournament format consisting of teams at each of the three levels. In addition, there are super-regional tournaments between the semi-professional youth soccer leagues. The U.S. Open and the Nike Women's Cup are two of these tournaments. A Youth Soccer National League tournament is played in June of each year. The third level league, the Youth Soccer State, is an independent amateur league that organizes competitions for high school and college soccer players. Unlike the Soccer Power Ranking system, in which every nation is ranked separately, the Youth Soccer State ranks each club separately within the United States. The U.S.A. does not have a national soccer league; however, several colleges and universities offer scholarships to players who participate in their programs. The U.S. Youth Soccer Association was formed in 1992 with the mission of "promoting soccer in the United States through volunteer involvement". This association is not linked to any national or international governing body and is governed by a volunteer board of directors. Many professional and aspiring youth players choose to become involved with this organization because of its affiliation with youth soccer and its focus on player development through the certified youth coach educational program. Youth Soccer Association certified coaches must meet certain standards of coaching education and experience before they may join the Association. All coaches are required to attend a minimum of two (2) week training sessions with the association and participate in an approved coaching course. Coaches in this particular type of soccer training program are expected to be committed and dedicated to their work. Coaches in the program are expected to be knowledgeable about soccer history, coaching principles, developmental training philosophies and methods, youth soccer recruiting strategies and nutritional needs of all players. Youth coaches are also expected to have a passion for the game and to have a commitment to continuous growth and development of the soccer skills of each player.
